Croatia in October: Is It Worth Visiting? Weather, Swimming & Half-Price Hotels

Ask any restaurateur in Hvar town what their favourite week of the year is and they'll say ‘the first week of October, when the tourists go but the sea is still warm.’ This is the case for visiting Croatia in October, plus what to plan around.

The Weather, Honestly

  • Early October (1–15): highs 22–25°C, sea 22°C, near-zero rain on the coast.
  • Late October (16–31): highs 18–21°C, sea 20°C, occasional rainy days.
  • Inland (Zagreb, Plitvice): highs 15–18°C, leaves turning, spectacular photography light.

Can You Still Swim?

Yes, well into mid-October. The Adriatic has been warming all summer and holds heat into autumn. Locals swim in t-shirts until water hits 18°C, which is usually late October or early November. Bring a quick-dry towel; the sun sets at 18:00, so finish your swim by 16:00 if you want to dry off in warmth.

October is when Croatia stops performing for visitors and just is itself. The konoba menus shrink to what's actually in season. The waiter has time to talk. The bill is a third less.

What is Open, What is Closed

  • Open: all cities, Plitvice, Krka, Dubrovnik walls, all major museums, most island restaurants until ~15 October.
  • Reduced: ferry schedules drop to winter timetable from ~1 October. Check the Split to Hvar guide.
  • Closing: smaller island konobas, beach clubs, party boats, late-night clubs in Hvar town.

What October Does Best

Food. The olive harvest runs late October to mid-November, the first cold-pressed oils appear in markets. Truffle season in Istria peaks in October. Wine harvest on the islands. Fewer cruise ships in Dubrovnik (down from ~3 a day in August to ~1 every other day).

Prices

Hotels: 40–50% off August rates. A Dubrovnik old-town room that is €400 in August is €180–€220 in mid-October. Restaurants: same menu prices, but you'll order less because the peka portions are made for working farmers' appetites, and reservations are no longer compulsory.
