Best Islands in Croatia for First-Time Visitors: Hvar vs Brač vs Vis Compared

Croatia has 1,244 islands, but for first-time visitors three names dominate Google: Hvar, Brač, Vis. They are very different places. This is the side-by-side.

Hvar: The Social One

Hvar town is gorgeous, a Venetian fortress over a half-moon harbour, with a renaissance square the size of St Mark's. It is also Croatia's party capital, with beach clubs, late-night bars and yacht tourism in July and August. Outside the town, it is olive groves, lavender fields and quiet stone villages. Read Hvar beyond the marina for the side most visitors miss.

  • Best for: social travellers, couples, foodies, anyone who wants a famous town.
  • Avoid if: you want quiet evenings in July/August.
  • Get there: Split–Hvar catamaran, 1 hour.

Brač: The Family One

Brač is bigger, calmer, and home to the most-photographed beach in Croatia: Zlatni Rat, the V-shaped pebble spit at Bol that changes shape with the wind. The island is famous for its white limestone (the White House in Washington uses Brač stone) and for being more affordable than Hvar. Sutivan and Milna are postcard fishing villages with family-run apartments.

  • Best for: families, watersports lovers (Bol is a windsurf capital), longer stays.
  • Avoid if: you want nightlife.
  • Get there: Split–Supetar car ferry, 50 minutes, runs hourly.

Vis: The Slow One

Vis was a Yugoslav military island, closed to foreigners until 1989. As a result, it skipped the 1980s coastal building boom and stayed quiet. The two towns, Vis Town and Komiža, are unrenovated in the best sense, the wine (vugava and plavac mali) is excellent, and the famous Blue Cave on neighbouring Biševo is a 30-minute boat ride.

  • Best for: quiet travellers, returning visitors, food and wine lovers.
  • Avoid if: you have less than 3 nights or need a nightclub.
  • Get there: Split–Vis catamaran, 1h 30min.
If you have one week, do two islands, not three. The point of an island is to stop moving.

How to Combine Them

The classic 10-day trip: Split (2 nights) → Hvar (3) → Vis (2) → back to Split. Brač works as a long day trip from Split if you don't have a full island night. Pair with our Croatia road trip itinerary for the full coast version.
