What to Pack for Croatia: A Realistic Mediterranean Packing List
Water shoes, a power bank, a paper map of the old towns. A locally written packing list that assumes you know what underwear looks like and focuses on what's actually different about Croatia.

Croatia is Mediterranean, EU, euro-using, and English-speaking in any tourist context. So most of what you'd pack for Italy or Spain works. These are the items that are genuinely Croatia-specific.
The Things You Will Wish You Brought
- Water shoes / reef shoes. Croatian beaches are almost all pebble, not sand. Sea urchins live on the rocks. €20 shoes save the trip.
- Quick-dry travel towel. Hotels charge for beach towels; an apartment rarely has one.
- EU Type F plug adapter. Same as Germany/France. Two-pin round.
- Power bank. You'll be on boats, beaches and walls all day; outlets in old towns are scarce.
- Reusable water bottle. Tap water is excellent everywhere in Croatia. Don't buy plastic.
- Light layer for evenings. Even August nights drop to 20°C; on a ferry deck you'll want sleeves.
- Real sunscreen, SPF 50. Adriatic sun reflects off limestone and water; you will burn faster than you think.
What to Wear in Old Towns
Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar, Trogir are paved in polished limestone, mirror-smooth and lethal in flip-flops after rain. Pack one pair of rubber-soled walking sandals (Tevas, Keens). Save the cute leather slides for the dinner table.
Every August, the Dubrovnik pharmacy on Stradun sells out of plasters and arnica gel. Both for the same reason: limestone and leather soles.
Modesty for Churches
Shoulders and knees covered at Dubrovnik Cathedral, Diocletian's Cathedral in Split, the Plitvice chapels. A light scarf in your day-bag covers both.
What to Leave at Home
- Hairdryer — every hotel has one.
- Cash in dollars — Croatia is fully euro. Bring euros or a card.
- Snorkel mask if you're only visiting one beach. Rent for €5/day at any cove.
- A car, in old towns. Old towns are car-free. Park outside and walk.
Documents & Apps
- Passport (EU citizens: ID card).
- EHIC / GHIC for EU and UK travellers, plus travel insurance.
- Apps: Jadrolinija, Krilo, Bolt (taxis in Split & Zagreb), Google Translate offline Croatian pack.
