Both are travertine river parks, both are UNESCO listed, both are gorgeous. They are different enough that the choice matters. Here's the side-by-side.
Plitvice in One Paragraph
Sixteen lakes, cascading through a forested limestone canyon, 78 km from Zadar, 140 km from Split. The wow factor is the scale: kilometres of wooden boardwalks just above bright turquoise water. Swimming forbidden. Allow at least a full day. See our Plitvice one-day loop.
Krka in One Paragraph
A single river (the Krka) with a series of waterfalls, the most famous being Skradinski Buk, a 45-metre-wide curtain that drops into a swimmable pool. 45 km from Split. Swimming was banned in 2021 at the main falls but is permitted at upper lakes (Roški Slap area). Smaller, easier to half-day.
Which Should You Pick?
- You only have one day, you're based in Split: Krka. Half-day trip, easy.
- You're already doing the Zagreb–Split route: Plitvice. It's on the way.
- You want the bigger photographs: Plitvice.
- You want to swim: Neither at the main falls. Try Rastoke village instead, between Zagreb and Plitvice, with wild mill-house swimming holes.
- Travelling with kids who can't sit still: Krka, shorter trails.
Both parks have raised entry prices sharply since 2023. Plitvice in July is €40, in November €10. Krka in July is €40, in November €7. Shoulder season is the right answer for both.
Plitvice Practical Notes
- Open year-round. Snow in winter, mosquitoes in August.
- Two entrances: Entrance 1 (lower lakes) and Entrance 2 (upper lakes). The H, K, C trails are the classics.
- Tickets must be reserved online in summer at np-plitvicka-jezera.hr.
- Stay nearby at Mukinje or Korana to start at 7:00 before tour buses arrive.
Krka Practical Notes
- Skradin entrance is the prettiest, a free boat ride up the river to the falls.
- Visovac monastery on an island in the middle of the lake, separate boat tour.
- Half-day from Split is realistic.
